Thou Shalt Not Speak

This post is rather political, but since it can fit into a category here, I thought "why not". So some of you may know who is Mr Brown, his blog mrbrown.com and his articles in Today newspaper provided a lot of comic relief for me, especially during the recent GE as well as my reservist training after that (everyone in camp was playing his podcasts on their fancy phones). Anyway this guy wrote an article "S'poreans are fed, up with progress!" that apparently touched some raw nerves, and this was the reply. Now his column in Today has been suspended.

To me it's not a matter of whether what Mr Brown wrote was appropriate. I also do not question the necessity of the reply. But getting suspended? Such heavy-handedness! It also resonates with my conversation with a friend (also in teaching) this afternoon about some dirty tricks played on her by her boss to keep her from leaving. I don't understand why some people are in public service. Are they here really to serve the public? Or are they here to serve their own greed, their personal ambitions, their own fears, their own insecurities... What brightened my day was this video that convinced me that there are still people thinking. Ok, that last word made me think of TSLN...

Anyway I feel dirty being a civil servant. I don't even know why I'm still here. I yearn for the mountains.
